Located in Kerala, India Sabarimala is one of the world’s major hindu piligrimage centre which is the abode of Lord Ayyappa – the son of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. People from all over the world visit this temple after observing a 41 days (mandalam deeksha) austerity.

The temple which opens for only few days every month during the year, witnesses a major festive and devotees rush during the Malayalam months of Vrishchikam, Dhanush and Makaram falling in mid November to Third week of January.

Though Sri Venugopal swamy visits Sabarimala like others, in 1989 he for the first time thought, planned and went with 4 other devotees to Sabarimala on foot from Hyderabad covering approximately 1250 kilometres in 38 days, passing through the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, through urban, rural and forest terrain.

After similar trips in 1991 and 1993, since 1995 he has been regularly going by padayatra to Sabarimala. Till 2004 he has completed 14 padayatras to Sabarimala and intends to complete 18 times, to symbolize the mystical 18 golden steps at the Sabarimala temple.

What started with 5 devotees, has been increasing every year and in 2003 107 devotees accompanied him on the padayatra. People from all walks of life join this padayatra and experience a great satisfaction on completion and would want to undertake again with him.

Every year, all along the route, people from various cities, states and locals have provided hospitality, free food and shelter to the pilgrims and devotees accompanying in the padayatra, for which Sri Venugopal Guruswamy is very grateful.
